LUBBOCK – Lubbock County voters have passed a proposition to build a new medical examiner’s office.
For over four years, the county has been without a certified forensic pathologist, costing upward of $1 million per year to transport bodies needing autopsies.
The $35 million bond is going toward building the 31,440-sf facility west of N. Holly St. and south of E. Kent St. The building will serve a population of 500,000 to prepare for future growth.
The county has received $10 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding to make up the remainder of the $45 million cost.
Construction begins in early 2024. The facility will be operational in spring 2026.
