MIDLAND – A 23.5-acre community called The Field’s Edge is emerging on the southwest side of town to help the city’s homeless population. The project is spearheaded by John-Mark Echols.
In 2019, Echols began a capital campaign to construct the first phase of tiny homes in Midland.
Phase one of the community began in March 2021. This phase saw the completion of the Mabee Foundation Community Center, which houses offices, spaces for behavioral and physical healthcare clinics, a garden, and a versatile multipurpose room.
Phase one also consists of nine single-occupancy tiny homes, a missional home, as well as a commercial bath, kitchen, and laundry facility.
The Field’s Edge plans call for 90 tiny homes, along with an additional ten homes for mission-driven residents who volunteer on the site.
According to the Midland Homeless Coalition’s 2023 survey on the county, there were 255 homeless individuals documented in Midland County, with 76 living on the streets and 179 living in shelters
