Historic Sheraton Gunter Hotel shedding century-old name for refurbishment

SAN ANTONIO – The signs at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel have been switched, shedding the Sheraton name after over 100 years.

That minor change signals a massive renovation project that’s expected to kick off at the beginning of 2024. Axle Capital Group is investing more than $30 million into a complete interior and exterior facelift.

The goal is to join the elevated Marriott Tribute line of boutique hotels.

Every guest room, the lobby and all common areas, as well as the exterior, will be overhauled. The team plans to use historic tax credits as part of the financing structure.

The existing fitness center will double in size and get more modern equipment. Plans call for a Top Golf suite on the side that faces N. Saint Mary’s St.

In the overall theme of the interior design, McCarthy said the hotel’s musical history will play a prominent role.

To that end, the group is considering installing a recording studio for artists and podcasters. At the end of the renovation, there will likely be eight fewer rooms than the existing 322.

Renovations are expected to be finished in November 2024.
