AMARILLO – Xcel Energy has completed a $7.6 million substation upgrade and new power line project to meet growing customer demand.
The project improves speed and reliability, relieving the strain put on existing facilities.
Xcel Energy’s work at Farmers Substation, located southeast of the intersection of South Georgia St. at Farmers Ave., involved the addition of a new substation transformer and three new feeder lines to serve the ever-growing South Georgia Business Park.
Xcel Energy recently completed the Echo Substation near the intersection of East Hastings Ave. and Echo St.
Several other Xcel substations have been built within the year as well, including the Centerport and Lawrence Park Substations near the new Amazon facility and the Preston West Substation off Coulter St. and Loop 335.
“The investments Xcel Energy has made in substation and distribution infrastructure have been critical to our efforts to attract 3,000 new jobs and over $2 billion in capital investment over the past two years,” said Amarillo Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) President Kevin Carter.
In the South Georgia Business Park, AEDC has helped bring $200 million in capital investments responsible for 350 new jobs.
Xcel has other upcoming expansions in the Amarillo area such as a new operation center in Bushland and two more substations.
