StorageCafe: Austin homes among nation's most spacious

AUSTIN – Austin is a popular destination for homebuyers seeking the most room to spread out while staying urban, according to StorageCafe. The city ranks sixth for most spacious living, offering buyers “plenty of room for both indoor and outdoor enjoyment, even as lot sizes shrink nationwide.”

With a median lot size of about 8,620 sf, Austin’s median is about 500 sf bigger than Dallas’, which was the next Texas city on StorageCafe’s list.

The typical Austin home is about 2,000 sf, which ranks the city third for living space offered. An Austin home occupies only 23 percent of the lot, leaving plenty of room for green space.

Austin’s single-family homes expanded over the past decade, registering a median size of 2,400 sf in 2023, 19 percent more than the overall inventory. Building lots, on the other hand, lost significant space and are almost 16 percent smaller than the city’s overall median lot size.

StorageCafe says the city’s property prices have doubled over the last decade. With an average price tag of over $586,000, Austin joins the list of the most expensive real estate markets, below only Washington DC, Boston, NYC, Seattle, Denver, Miami, and a few California cities.
