SAN ANTONIO – The Greehey Family Foundation, headed by former NuStar Energy chairman, has contributed $1 million toward the San Antonio Zoo’s Generation Zoo capital campaign.
The gift will help fund the first phase of the zoo’s master plan, which includes a new entrance and plaza, a major gorilla habitat, and an events center.
Phase one will cost roughly $67 million. With the Greehey contribution, the zoo has secured 75 percent of that funding.
The new entrance is set to open in November. The gorilla habitat and event center will be completed by early 2025.
The new event center, expected to cost roughly $15 million, will be connected to the planned gorilla habitat.
The zoo expansion is primarily funded through donations, 2022 municipal bond funds, and Midtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone funds.
