Record growth of North Austin suburbs means millions in infrastructure changes

NORTH AUSTIN – The area’s rapidly rising population is increasing traffic congestion and creating a need for more infrastructure.

Many residents who live in subdivisions along SH 29 have said they all have the same struggle: driving is becoming overwhelmingly dangerous and difficult.

As a result, TxDOT, Liberty Hill, Leander, Georgetown, Williamson County, and developers have all coordinated to improve safety for drivers there.

Several road projects are now underway or have recently finished, including a road-widening project near the Wolf Ranch development, alternative routes to reach I-35, intersection improvements to make turning on and off the road easier, and traffic lights to slow vehicles.

Developers and governments are also trying to address water infrastructure issues brought on by the influx of people.

Georgetown is building the South Lake Water Treatment Plant, a $175.3 million project that will produce 44 million gallons of treated water a day. This will provide water for others outside of the Georgetown jurisdiction as well.
