SA African-American museum planning $40M move

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio African-American Community Archive & Museum is slowly outgrowing its space in La Villita and plans to move in 2026.

The museum will relocate to the Kress-Grant Building at 311 East Houston St. The property totals more than 44,000 sf.

A cultural center, 500-seat auditorium, and working lunch counter are all on the drawing board.

Museum CEO and Director Deborah Omowale Jarmon wants potential visitors to come away with a sense of the contributions that African descendants have made to the community and the kind of resiliency that inspires future generations.

She added that throughout the operation of the center, the museum will prioritize Black vendors. Elevating those vendors aligns with the organization’s mission and gives them a chance to improve their standing.

Jarmon estimates the whole endeavor should cost about $40 million.

Overland Partners is leading the project’s design.
