CANYON – West Texas A&M University plans to bring new life to its Education Building, called “Old Ed” by students. The building was built in the 1920s and closed in the 1980s. Since then it has been used for storage.
The multi-purpose building will become a hub for distance learners as online classes have become popular, with around 3,500 current online students. There will also be accommodations for the graduate school, including offices and classrooms.
“We believe that our digital outreach is going to be very important, and we want to do it in a very high-quality fashion so that people really are attracted to these digital programs,” said University President, Walter Wendler.
When it re-opens, it will be called the Geneva Schaeffer Education Building, named after Geneva Schaeffer, who has an extensive history with the campus.
Construction will start in January 2024. The building is scheduled to reopen under its new name in 2025.
