Former Waco YMCA reopens as Doris Miller Community Center

WACO – The Doris Miller Community Center (DMCC) officially opened to the public last week after the city spent $2 million and almost two years to bring the facility back from the state of disrepair it had fallen into before the YMCA sold it to the city for $2.7 million in 2021.

The 31,600-sf building received a complete facelift, including new flooring, wood in the gymnasium, lighting, paint, heating and AC, and expanded game rooms.

The indoor pool will use up the remaining $900,000 of the renovation budget, and it is not expected to open until spring at the earliest.

This project is expected to be finalized in the spring of 2024. Without any money left, the outdoor pool will not be opening as it also needs a significant amount of rehabilitation.

The center will offer children’s summer camps, fitness classes for seniors, and recreational athletic programs.

The DMCC will replace the Bledsoe-Miller Community Center, which will be converted into a STEM-focused facility for children.
