AUSTIN – Texas and many of its counties continued with its strong population growth in the wake of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, reports the Texas Demographic Center.
In 2022, Texas’s population surpassed 30 million and ranks second in the country behind California.
The main driver of Texas’ population growth in 2022 was domestic migration, accounting for 49 percent of the state’s overall growth.
Six of the top ten U.S. counties with the largest numerical growth and five of the ten fastest growing counties are in Texas. Counties that experienced the largest numerical population increase are generally core metropolitan counties, while counties with the highest growth rate are suburban ring counties surrounding them.
Harris County ranked second in numerical growth and Kaufman County ranked second in growth rate among all counties in the U.S.
