CUERO – Austin-based Amherst plans to produce 600 prebuilt homes a year at its new 330,000-sf manufacturing facility. The company hopes to ease the shortage of rental housing around the state.
Amherst will invest more than $12 million in the factory, which is in an old mill the company purchased two years ago. It will employ 265 workers.
The company’s manufactured homes will be made of wood and placed on permanent foundations on vacant lots or sites of blighted properties.
Homes will range from one- to two-story single-family homes to duplexes and triplexes. Although some will be for sale, the company’s primary goal is to produce rentals.
