HOUSTON – Rice University will build a new student center that will largely replace the Rice Memorial Center (RMC).
Designed by Adjaye Associates, the three-story, 80,000-sf structure will incorporate functions of the RMC with a multicultural center and rooftop auditorium.
It will contain a memorial to ten Navy ROTC students who died in 1953 when their transport plane crashed and for whom the RMC is named.
Rice will retain a few elements of the RMC, such as the chapel and cloisters, but most of the building will be demolished.
Kendall/Heaton Associates will be the executive architect, and Tellepsen will provide preconstruction services.
Rice will start on the project in first quarter 2022 with completion set for fall 2023.
